Bribery Act – Not Again Please!!

July 2012

The Bribery Act came into force in 2011 and all the event industry talking heads promptly went into overdrive rambling on and on bemoaning the imminent end of the corporate hospitality industry.

Obviously we all know that the purpose of the act was twofold, namely:

1. Discourage dodgy builders from slipping brown envelopes into the sweaty hand of a grasping local authority luminary.

2. Prevent the British Arms Industry from being able to compete with their American and French competitors in generating overseas orders and consequently add to the decline of British manufacturing jobs.

Despite our lords and masters in Whitehall making this blindingly obvious the lawyers saw the £££ signs, the pen-pushers took the opportunity to find another way to hinder their sales force from selling widgets, and the self-proclaimed ‘voices of the events industry’ saw another opportunity to bore the pants off us all by talking complete twaddle.

Surely it’s obvious to anybody with enough nous to be able to work out which end of a toothbrush you clean your teeth with exactly what is and what is not a bribe?

Which brings me to the point. I know they’ve got to write about something but why oh why is the front cover of this month’s Meetings and Incentive Travel magazine trumpeting yet another article on the subject? Don’t ask me what it said as I don’t know. All I do know is that the red mist descended and I threw that highly respected publication at the paper basket. And missed.

007 Theme Night

November 2011

Last night KDM provided a 007 Theme Night for 300 guests at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate.

The event is an annual dinner hosted by a leading organisation in the field of parenteral and enteral nutrition. Guests were encouraged to dress in costume for the event which was attended by dieticians, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, speech & language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and all involved in the provision of care in the community and in care homes.

KDM provided table dressing, room theming and entertainment for the annual dinner during the premier networking and learning event, for all involved in nutritional care.

Guests got into the mood as they drank martinis during the drinks reception before being led into the dining area where tables were decorated with a ‘shaken not stirred ‘martini glass centrepiece filled with ice, lights and glittering 007 logos. After a sumptuous dinner guests were invited to gamble the night away on the fun casino or try their hand on the 007 laser shooting range. Themed props, designed and made by KDM, including silhouette panels, a giant fan of cards, giant dice, dollar signs and 007 backdrop were set up throughout.

This is the third year in succession KDM have been involved in the event and hope to be able to assist in 2012 too!

For information on hosting your own 007 themed company party please contact us on 01782 646300.

The Day Lady Gaga Came To The Unit

October 2011

What do James Bond, a Snowman, an Elephant and a Champagne Bottle have in common? They all live in the unit at KDM!

OK so they are props. James Bond is in a silhouette panel and it’s not a real elephant but they look pretty impressive anyway.

Room theming and lighting can enhance any room and turn a good themed event in to a great one. Imagine a Hollywood Awards night without the red carpet walkway, giant Oscars, giant clapper boards and directors chair? The table dressing is fabulous but once you add room theming the effect really can be ‘wow’.

Don’t take my word for it though. The below feedback is from a client’s recent Medici Masquerade Ball: “Your guys did a sterling job and proved that you can make a silk purse out of a pig’s ear (I refer to the venue with that comment). Lighting really is a marvellous thing and the team did marvellous things with it. We would definitely want to work with KDM again on future themed events.”

Our props are made at our offices in Trentham by the very creative Pete and we have a huge list of props already which is growing every day.

Whether you are planning a Midsummer Night’s Dream (OK maybe not for this time of year…a Winter’s Tale?), a Grease theme, an Out of Africa, Prohibition Party or Viva Las Vegas we have the table dressing and room theming to complement your chosen theme making your company party or award night one to remember.

Oh and in case you were wondering, Lady Gaga didn’t actually come to the KDM offices. She’s in a silhouette panel too!

A Company Party in Venice!

March 2011

For the fourth year running our client – a leading medical supplies
company – came to us to organise their annual staff ‘thank-you’ and awards night and this year asked us to provide a ‘Medici Masquerade’ themed event.

We were delighted to work with them on this project and luxurious table covering, decoration and Venetian centrepieces set the scene. Our giant Venetian masks, busts, columns and statues together with stunning lighting effects completed the setting for a corporate event to remember.

Entertainment was provided by one of our favourite function bands playing their ‘Time After Time Show’ – 3 sets from different eras, on this occasion 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

And the clients’ feedback … ‘Everything went superbly, the room looked lovely and everyone commented on how good it looked! The band was terrific, your staff were professional and efficient in their set up of the room … thank you again for all your help and we look forward to working with you again soon.’

The Italian Job – in Wiltshire!

September 2010

When a leading law firm wished to say thank-you to a major client they approached KDM for corporate hospitality ideas. We quickly established that the client was one who did rather than watched and possessed a passion for fast cars. We recommended our Italian Job event; cue the fleet of Mini Cooper S’s and six teams were quickly zipping around the Wiltshire countryside. Teams were navigating between villages, stretching the rules and scheming to gain every possible advantage in search of the cache of bullion which, as it transpired, was conveniently located at a nearby country house hotel where, mission accomplished, guests enjoyed the award ceremony and a delightful dinner. And who won ….. ? The lawyers, as usual!

Green Shoots of Recovery?

July 2010

It seems ironic that a Government elected to cut public expenditure and hence take money out of the economy seems to have created a sudden surge in demand for corporate events. The private sector has been watching its corporate entertainment and team building wallet very closely for the last eighteen months. Having minimal exposure to the public sector purse gave KDM no cushion as the private sector retrenched, and like everybody in our sector, sales dropped alarmingly and sadly job losses resulted.

Now with cuts in public expenditure en route we would expect the private sector to feel the first cuts as central and local government outsourcing and consultancy work dries up. The result should be to stifle any upturn in demand for discretionary expenditure as the corporate belt remains firmly tightened. Whilst it is early days and a minor recovery this time last year died with the cancellation of the corporate Christmas in 2009 seems not to be the case in 2010 and there is a growing demand for corporate events and away days.

Can it be that corporate Britain sees more economic stability ahead with a Government determined to keep public spending in check and, whilst many economic uncertainties abound, feel that they are in a position to retain profitability as they chart a course through the coming year? Or alternatively have we all got used to economic crises and now accept them as the norm?

American Diner Theme Night

February 2010

Our client had chosen a venue with American Diner style booths for their event conference finale party. It was our job to transform the rest of the room to emphasise the theme and get everyone talking. After a site visit, many hours of design and planning and full event management the result was stunning. (more…)

The Company Party from Heaven and Hell

January 2010

Normally our valued clients don’t tell us to “Go to Hell!” but for a Christmas party with an ‘eternal’ message this is exactly what they did! Tasked with providing an evening of Corporate Entertainment with a difference our excited client chose a Heaven and Hell theme and with tricky room limitations (and of course budget constraints!), it was our job to make it a reality.
