Fine Victorian architecture abounds in Manchester - many of its art galleries are sited within stunning Victorian buildings; at the City Art Gallery, you can see famous Pre-Raphaelite paintings and at Manchester Museum a fantastic collection of Egyptian mummies and fossils whilst the award winning Museum of Science and Industry illustrates the city's rich industrial and architectural heritage.
Manchester boasts more theatres than any other UK city outside London; it has two international orchestras and a huge club scene. At the Granada Studios Tour you can see behind the scenes of leading television programmes at Bridgewater Hall and the NYNEX Arena you can take parting exhibitions and see world-class bands.
In 2002 Manchester hosted the Commonwealth Games, the new stadium was built alongside the National Cycling Centre Velodrome. Manchester is also home to Lancashire County Cricket Club and two fine European standard football clubs Manchester City and Manchester United.
