Newcastle has exported local coal via the river Tyne since Elizabethan times; taxes from this trade brought great wealth to the city.
At one time one in four of the world's ships were built in the shipyards in this area.
Some famous bridges span the river including; the High Level Bridge which was designed by Robert Stephenson and was the world's first road and railway bridge, the most recent is Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the first opening bridge to be built across the River Tyne for more than 100 years
