  • The use of the title Royal Berkshire dates to the 19th century and was officially acknowledged by the Queen in 1957.

Dating from 840, Berkshire is one of the oldest counties in England, the likely extent of time of the unification of "Sunningum" (East Berkshire) and "Ashdown" (the Berkshire Downs and Kennet Valley). Berkshire is first mentioned by name in 860 and Berkshire is believed to take its name from a big forest of box trees called Bearroc which is believed, in turn, to be a Celtic word meaning "hill".

Many battles have been witnessed in Berkshire throughout history including the Battle of Reading, Alfred the Great's campaign against the Danes, the Battle of Ashdown and the Battle of Englefield. Newbury was the site of two Civil War battles, the first, at Wash Common in 1643 and the second Battle of Newbury in 1644 at Speen.
