  • Use of the title Royal Berkshire dates to the 19th century but was not officially recognised by the Queen until 1957 with letters patent issued confirming this in 1974.

Berkshire borders the counties of Buckinghamshire, Surrey, Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire.
Historically the county town was Abingdon, but in 1867 the larger town of Reading superseded Abingdon as county town. In 1974 Abingdon, along with some other Berkshire towns, were moved as part of local government reorganisation into Oxfordshire.

Whilst Berkshire County Council was abolished in 1988 Berkshire remains as a ceremonial county. In Berkshire the highest tiers of local government are now the unitary authorities of Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire, Slough and that of Maidenhead and Windsor.
