  • Usage of the Royal title Royal Berkshire dates to the 19th century with official recognition being made in the twentieth century

The land north of Kennet rises to the Berkshire Downs, a hilly area with smaller and well-wooded valleys draining into the Pang and Lambourn rivers. The open upland areas of the Berkshire Downs are famous for their involvement in horse racing and their training gallops.

Berkshire's horse racing connections also include Newbury Racecourse close to Newbury which hosts the Lockinge Stakes, one of Britain's Group 1 flat races. Berkshire is home to one of only two figure-of-eight courses in the UK at the Royal Windsor Racecourse whilst nearby Ascot Racecourse is one of the leading racecourses in the United Kingdom, playing host to nine of the UK's 32 yearly Group 1 races.

Berkshire’s Ascot course is closely associated with the British Royal Family and the racecourse itself belongs to the Crown Estate. Ascot's Royal Meeting, held in June, is its major attraction with the highlight being the Ascot Gold Cup which brings thousands of visitors to Berkshire. Ascot race course's most prominent race is the King George VI and in July the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is also run over the same course.
