Exeter is an old city in Devon, England. Exeter rests within the ceremonial county of Devon, of which it is the county town as well as the home of Devon County Council. Exeter's Latin name is, Isca Dumnoniorum ("Isca of the Dumnones or Devonians"), signifying that Exeter was of Celtic origin. Exeter's motto, Semper fidelis is traditionally held to have been proposed by Elizabeth I, in acknowledgement of Exeter's contribution of ships to help defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588; however its first archived use is in 1660.
