What Makes a Good Team?

Identifying where your team is succeeding and lacking can be an important process for any manager. As an events management company, we often try and fill the gaps that you have identified as needing improvement. However, you may be wondering what the ideal team looks like. In order to help you to understand where you want to get to, we’ve put together the following guide.

All Share a Common Goal

In order for your team to function to the best of its ability, it’s important that they share a common goal. However, in order to achieve this, it’s important to instill achievable goals and objectives in line with your business objectives. Through having all of your team members pulling in the same direction, you should find that motivation and productivity improves to no end.

This doesn’t just apply to those working on a shared project either. For example, if your team is working across multiple separate campaigns or projects, it could be that you wish for certain standards and qualities to be maintained across all work. Holding regular appraisals can be a great way to align your business’ goals with your employees’ personal goals. Involving the whole team in structuring the departmental objectives can also be a great way to generate a shared ownership of the business’ vision.

Respectful of Each Other

A key component of a good team is that its members are respectful of each other. Respect tends to be earned and can come in a variety of ways, from respecting each other’s workloads to understanding how each person communicates. We will touch on the latter point later in the article. However, there is plenty that you can do to embrace a respectful environment. For workload matters, you can generate a shared understanding with regular meetings to report back to the team. You could even consider having a shared document listing which lists each team member’s workload.

Instilling company values can often also involve being respectful of other staff members. If you already have these but feel that your team could benefit from a reminder, you could speak to our Event Managers to incorporate them into a team building exercise.

Good Communication Skills

As touched on above, communication is a vital tool to success when it comes to teams. Your team should understand how best to communicate with each other depending on the situation and the individual. As a manager, the responsibility of ensuring that this happens lies with you and there are plenty of ways that you can help. Take a look at how you currently communicate with your staff and how they communicate with each other. A good way to do this is to use a channel like Slack or Skype to set up various channels of communication. There, you should be able to create ways for your team to communicate quickly, which is especially useful for the rise in remote teams. In order to communicate effectively, it’s important that your staff get plenty of opportunities to do so. You should aim to create an atmosphere where your staff feel comfortable approaching each other with questions, concerns or even just a bit of personal chat.

Another great way to get your team to communicate better is through shared experiences and collaboration on projects. Here at KDM Events, we can help with that. Our event managers can work with you to understand what you would like out of your event and if better communication is what you’re after, there are plenty of options. Our challenge based Virtual Escape Room or Master the Task will require your team to work together to achieve a common goal. Alternatively, if you would prefer a more relaxed environment to allow your team to get to know each other, our Wine Tasting Evening could be perfect.

Create a Good Culture

In order for your staff to stay motivated and happy in their jobs, it’s important that you strike a good work and life balance in the workplace. This doesn’t necessarily mean more time off either. Creating a positive culture in your office or virtual team can be invaluable to increase staff retention. To do this, you should create opportunities for your staff to socialise, both in and out of work. One example would be creating regular coffee breaks throughout the day where your staff can switch off from their work and catch up with their colleagues.

Another option is to use an event management company like ourselves to host a virtual team building event. If you’re looking to bring your team closer together, we have just the events. From taking part in a Virtual Bake Off with a Michelin star Chef, to enjoying a wine tasting evening topped off with some live entertainment, you’re sure to find something in our range to suit your team’s taste.

Everyone is Pulling Their Weight

One of the leading causes of frustration and tension in teams can often be when a team member is not believed to be pulling their weight. According to Forbes, this is all too common with ninety-three percent of people working on a team doing so with at least one person who doesn’t do their share of the work. As the manager, it’s important that you recognise these frustrations early and deal with them appropriately to avoid any negativity in your team.

Taking the relevant person for a one-to-one conversation will allow you to acknowledge the issue and try and understand why it is happening. It’s important to attempt to understand the issue and if it’s work related, try and resolve it. It could be that a lack of any of the previously mentioned points has led to this reduced productivity. If that is the case, you can take the steps advised in our guide to resolve the situation. If it’s simply a lack of communication or motivation, you can work with our Event Managers to tailor an event to your team’s needs.
