1. Choose the right person
Delegation works most effectively when you choose the right person for the job. You must trust them to do the job effectively and step back to allow them to do it in full faith. Therefore, take care in selecting the right person.
2. Give a clear brief
Outline your expectations clearly with a solid brief. This might include a brief overview of why the task is important, how it will feed into the overall success of a project, and a clear set of objectives.
3. Grant decision-making authority
If a task will require a person to make decisions, give them the green light to do this. Also ensure that you give them full access to all the resources they will need to carry out the task and any notable background information.
4. Keep the lines of communication open
Make it clear that if help is needed, you are willing to give it. Reaffirm to the person that you trust them to carry out the task, and you will give them the space to do it, but if they need support you can step in to provide it.
Also, for a long-term project, check-in with them. When it comes to delegation, you are still ultimately responsible for the outcomes of the task, so in the interests of keeping everything on track make a point of touching base regularly and be clear as to when this will be.
Delegation is an important tool in the leader’s arsenal. No man (or woman) is an island, and as such it’s natural to pass on tasks to the wider team for completion. Your willingness to delegate may reflect how much you trust subordinates and team members to deliver. If you are concerned about this, it’s important to understand why that is and the steps you can take to remedy it. It may be that your team needs guidance in building important skills through team building, or certain members need more support in order to carry out their jobs effectively.
Whatever the reason, when you get to a place where delegation is a viable option for you there’s no doubt you will feel the benefits right away. As will your organisation and team!
If you’re not quite there yet in terms of feeling that you have a strong, solid team to delegate to, it may be time to consider a team building activity to not only strengthen your team as a whole, but to establish trust and effective communication. Here at KDM Events we offer a huge range of team building opportunities which can be tailored to groups of all sizes across the UK.
