History of the building

Throughout its history, the Leake Street arches have undergone significant transformation. Since the 1920s, the tunnel has been a notorious hub for debauchery, with liquor sellers lining the lane and attracting keen drinkers and revellers.

In 2008, a significant shift occurred when renowned graffiti artist Banksy organised the ‘Cans Festival’ turning the once grimy tunnel into a vibrant space for British subculture creativity.

Banky’s influence has extended beyond the Leake Street Arches, reshaping the perception of graffiti as a legitimate form of art, and providing inclusive opportunities for artists to showcase their work.
